Synopsis
The highly anticipated and chilling world premiere musical from
legendary composer John Kander and acclaimed playwright Greg Pierce (The Landing).
Seventeen-year-old Luke returns home after vanishing a year ago. Profoundly changed, Luke and his parents struggle to adjust to life following his disappearance. Only finding solace with Emily, the quirky proprietor of an offbeat garden shop, Luke grapples with a past undone and a coming of age that came too late to a boy who just wants to fade away.
The second collaboration between Kander (Chicago, Cabaret) and Pierce (Slowgirl), Kid Victory is a hauntingly mesmerizing original musical about what it means to disappear.

Cut songs
and additional musical numbers
Kander & Ebb wrote a number of songs for THE ACT that were either cut from the show or not used at all. Most of these songs can be found on the Composers' Demo Recording of the show performed by Kander & Ebb themselves (see Recordings).
Two songs that were originally used in other projects - namely "Isn't This Better?" (from the movie FUNNY LADY) and "There Goes The Ball Game" (from the movie NEW YORK, NEW YORK) - were at one point considered to be part of the score for THE ACT but then cut again prior to opening.
Another song, "Hollywood, California", was still part of the score when the show opened on Broadway but then got cut after opening night and is thus also omitted from the Original Broadway Cast Recording.

An original cast album was released by RCA Victor Broadway in 1968. The LP includes all of the songs from the score (with the exception of "The Happy Time (Reprise)", the second Act "Ballet" and "Being Alive" which was cut after opening) performed by the original Broadway cast.

Some songs were slightly edited for the recording, eliminating all dialogue and being trimmed down to a more classical song form.
Also, the song order was slightly different from the performance where "My Own Space" was performed as a kind of faux encore, following the finale ("Walking Papers").
The Original Broadway cast recording was released by RCA Victor Broadway in January 1968 and the CD was released on March 10, 1992.
John Kander himself is featured on the recording, playing the piano in "My Own Space".

Signature Theatre Sets Cast for New John Kander & Greg Pierce Musical KID VICTORY;
Performances Begin Next Month
© 2015 BroadwayWorld.com
Virginia's Signature Theatre has announced the full cast for the world premiere production of Kid Victory, a new musical from legendary composer John Kander (Chicago, Cabaret) and acclaimed playwright Greg Pierce (Slowgirl).
Directed by Liesl Tommy (Associate Artistic Director at Berkeley Rep, Woolly Mammoth's Appropriate), the ensemble piece will feature Christopher Bloch (Dad/Joseph; Signature's Cloak & Dagger), Laura Darrell (Girl/Suze; York Theatre Company's Smiling the Boy Fell Dead), Jeffry Denman (Michael; Broadway's White Christmas and The Producers), Parker Drown (Boy/Andrew; Signature's Hairspray), Valerie Leonard (Woman/Gail; Signature's Sunday in the Park with George), Sarah Litzsinger (Emily; Broadway's Beauty and the Beast and LES MISERABLES), Christiane Noll (Mom/Eileen; Signature's Witches of Eastwick and Broadway's Ragtime), Bobby Smith (Man/Franklin; Signature's The Threepenny Opera and Spin) and Jake Winn (Luke).
The production begins performances at Signature Theatre's MAX Theatre February 17. It will play for five weeks, through March 22.
"I'm thrilled to have John Kander and Greg Pierce at Signature for the premiere of their newest work - Kid Victory," stated Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer. "As a huge Kander and Ebb fan, it is always a pleasure to have Kander's melodies on our stage. I've been fond of Greg's work as a playwright and so this was the perfect fit for our anniversary season. John and Greg have created an original work that pushes the boundaries of musical theater in an exciting and fresh way and we couldn't be prouder to have it on our stage with this amazing company."
Kid Victory marks the second collaboration between John Kander and Greg Pierce. Their first musical, The Landing, premiered at The Vineyard Theatre in 2013 and was declared "elegant and poignant" by The New York Times. Kander and Pierce were heralded as a "beguiling, risk-taking, new writing team" by Newsday.
"Greg and I are thrilled that Kid Victory will come to life at this theatre we love so much," said composer John Kander.
"After we finished our musical The Landing, John and I started thinking about what we wanted to write next," said lyricist and book writer Greg Pierce. "We got interested in the stories of missing people. We were especially intrigued by the question of what happens when someone who's been missing comes back home. With that in mind, we developed the character of Luke. We put him in a small town in Kansas and built a world around him. His story started to twist and turn, and before long there was music and words to go with it."

"KID VICTORY, new musical from legendary John Kander, to premiere at Signature"
Washington Post, January 30, 2015
Washington Post, January 30, 2015
"The new show KID VICTORY sets up as harsh material for a musical: It’s about a 17-year-old boy who goes missing, and what happens after his brutal time away.
But then composer John Kander was always willing to take on heavy themes with his longtime lyricist partner, Fred Ebb, who died in 2004. Nazis? CABARET. Murder and tabloid journalism? CHICAGO. Political imprisonment and illicit homosexuality? KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. Racism? THE SCCOTTSBORO BOYS.
Kander, 87, carries on. One of his last projects with Ebb, THE VISIT — about an aging rich woman who returns to her hometown seeking vengeance — is finally heading to Broadway this spring, with Chita Rivera in the role she played when the show was at Signature Theatre in 2008. And with writer Greg Pierce, Kander will premiere KID VICTORY at Signature this month.
Pierce, younger than Kander by five decades, is a playwright and short-story writer. His drama SLOWGIRL launched Lincoln Center Theatre’s rooftop 112-seat Claire Tow stage in 2012 at the same time his first collaboration with Kander, THE LANDING, was in workshop form at Manhattan’s Vineyard Theatre, featuring David Hyde Pierce (Greg’s uncle).
For Kander, it was the first full show he’d written with anyone since Ebb’s death. 'A rehearsal hall is the safest place in the world, and it’s what I like best,' Kander said in 2012.
Don’t expect anything safe from KID VICTORY, which examines the aftermath of a kidnapping as the victim returns home to Kansas. Signature has already billed it as 'chilling,' but musical theater buffs will want to risk it for a first look at anything new from the legendary Kander."
